AKSS Ultimate 2014 Indoor League Report

Term 2 mixed indoor league:
The 2014 mixed indoor school league (playing a 2/2 male/female split) saw 26 teams from 11 schools compete. Defenders of the Mixed Indoor League title – AGS Airbenders (an Auckland Grammar/Epsom Girls mixed combo) took on Avondale College 1 in the final. The polish of the AGS Airbenders, with several players having recently returned from representing NZ at the U19 World Champs outclassed Avondale and allowed them to keep their hands on the Mixed Indoor League shield.

Term 3 girls/boys indoor league:
The term 3 league involved 29 teams in total (14 girls teams and 15 boys teams).A new zone competition format was introduced for the term 3 league, with an Eastern Zone competition held at Kohimarama ASB Stadium, and a Central Zone competition hosted at Auckland Grammar School. This allowed the league to grow, provide more game time for players, and introduced new school Selwyn College to the league. Although new to the school indoor league, Selwyn put up some tough competition with a few upsets against more established teams from Pakuranga and Baradene. I’m sure with Selwyn’s recently appointed new sports coordinator, Iain Stewart taking charge of the ultimate scene at Selwyn we’ll have more to see from them in the future.Baradene score a goal

The top two teams from each of the girls and boys divisions in each zone progressed to the Auckland Indoor League Championship play-offs and finals night.

The cross over-games saw play-offs between Baradene 1 vs EGGS 1 and Baradene 4 vs Takapuna 1 in the Girls division; and Auckland Grammar 1 vs Pakuranga 2 and Auckland Grammar 3 vs Pakuranga 2 in the boys division. Out of those closely fought games, the central division teams came out victorious, resulting in an Epsom Girls vs Takapuna Grammar girls division final and Auckland Grammar vs Auckland Grammar boys final. The Grammar Boys battled it out, trading points to start with and keeping it close before Auckland Grammar 1 pulled away to comfortably take the victory 9-5.

The girls’ final was intense from start to finish, trading points all the way and all tied up at 7-all with one minute to play. A score by Epsom Girls to put them one point ahead, followed by a great moment of defense to get the disc back in hand gave Epsom Girls the win (final score 8-7).

Spirit Triple Glory – kudos to Northcote College for taking out the spirit prize in every division they played in – Mixed League, Boys (central div) and Girls Central (div). Baradene 1 and Pakuranga 1 took out the girls and boys spirit prizes in the Eastern Zone league, clearly showing their knowledge of the rules, playing within them and leading by example.

Many thanks to Ethan Taylor, league coordinator for Mixed Indoor League and Central Div (boys/girls) league and Iain Stewart, Coordinator of the Eastern Zone (boys/girls) league. And a huge thank you to the time and effort put in by coaches, team managers, sports coordinators and the student organizer/reps who are the driving forces behind the school ultimate scene and contributing hugely to the continued growth of the schools ultimate programme.
